Japan is located on the joint of four different plates. So unfortunately, earthquakes occur often.

WHAT TO DO IN AN EARTHQUAKE
Because of the hard experiences, Japan is trying to strengthen safety measures.
But if an earthquake happens while traveling, you must be scared because you are in an unfamiliar country.

IF YOU’RE INSIDE
If you’re inside during an earthquake happens, you should not go outside.
Please protect heads of you and your child from falling object. There are some pillows in your hotel room that’s useful for covering your head.
Get away from dangerous object like windows, TV, kitchen cabinet, and hide under a sturdy table.
Also, open the door or window to secure an evacuation route, if it is possible.
INSIDE AN ELEVATOR
It is said that you must not use an elevator, when an earthquake happens.
But, if you’re inside an elevator at that time, what should you do?
The most important thing is to get away from the elevator. Please press all button to get off.
Actually, most elevators in Japan are equipped with secure system. But it is better to press all floors just in case.
IF YOU’RE OUTSIDE
If you’re outside, please get away from brick walls, electrical wires, and protect heads of you and your child.
And you should evacuate to a safe place like park to move away from buildings.
Also, if you are near a sea, escape to higher ground, because there’s a possibility that the earthquake cause tsunami.
CHECK THE INFORMATION
After the earthquake stopped, please check the information if it is possible.
Japan Meteorological Agency always offer information of natural disaster.
If you need to escape to another place, you should put on shoes so that you don’t get hurt by broken glasses.
Also, please use the escape stairs, not the elevator.
If you need an ambulance and there are Japanese people near you, have someone call an ambulance.
If there are no Japanese people, call the number 119, and tell them “Emergency”, your address, name, and condition of injury.
